Concept
PATIO reimagines the traditional Mediterranean garden through a contemporary and sustainable lens. Inspired by Andalusian patios (spaces with Roman roots traditionally used for social gathering and respite from the heat) the project offers a place of calm, freshness and connection.
Terracotta pots, grid meshes, soil and vegetation are used as modular elements that can be repurposed or recycled, leaving no trace beyond memory. While the exterior appears deliberately chaotic and layered, the interior reveals a sense of order, calm and enclosure.
Inverted terracotta pots form boundaries, creating continuity from walls to ceiling. Dappled daylight, combined with the scent and colour of carefully curated foliage, creates a rich, synaesthetic experience.
Experience
Visitors are invited to move through, observe and pause within the space. A pamphlet made from wildflower seed paper offers insight into the project and can be taken home and planted, allowing the experience to continue beyond the garden.
Community
PATIO is envisioned as a collaborative exhibition garden. Local artists, schools and community organisations are invited to contribute by creating unique terracotta pots within set dimensions. These pieces add individuality, colour and texture, while fostering a sense of ownership and connection among participants.
Radicepura Garden Festival is an international mediterranean landscape biennale showcasing outstanding garden design in Sicily.
